Tenants in Expiring Use Buildings

There are several thousand tenants in Cambridge who are living in properties which are subject to affordability restrictions that may expire in the next ten years. Over the last several years, the City has had great success in preserving affordability at a number of these properties, due to the active participation and cooperation of tenants, advocates and owners committed to preservation.

The City monitors the status of housing subject to expiring use restrictions, and works with tenants, owners, non-profit housing partners, advocates, the Cambridge Housing Authority, and other public lenders to create preservation plans to ensure continued affordability of expiring use properties in Cambridge.

There are a wide variety of ways that tenants can get involved in the process and bring attention to the need for preservation at their property. Tenants have assisted in preservation efforts by holding meetings with other tenants to keep residents updated and informed, participating in meetings with City officials, and conducting outreach to advocates, funders, and other stakeholders.

• Cambridge Economic Opportunity Council (CEOC) with support from the City works with and advocates for tenants and works with owners to address tenant concerns in their buildings. 
• Cambridge and Somerville Legal Services (CASLS)  provides free legal assistance to low income residents living in the city.
