Street Lighting
The 2010 City Lighting Study, on which the Electrical Department and the Community Development Department collaborated, called for the evaluation of emerging LED (light emitting diode) street light fixtures for use in Cambridge. With costs of the fixtures decreasing, the greater energy efficiency and light quality of LED fixtures provide an option for the City to save money and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The City has piloted LED street lights on Inman Street and Rindge Avenue and Cambridge and has begun to specify them for major streetscape improvements. The City is currently replacing all street, park, and decorative lights with LED fixtures. This work will primarily involve replacing low pressure sodium fixtures and some halide lights with LEDs.
The City previously converted all of its traffic and pedestrian signals to LED technology was has resulted in significant cost savings and environmental benefits.
