Sustainable Buildings Map

Over 200 Cambridge buildings are designated as sustainable or "green." These structures have third-party designation as sustainable from an internationally recognized certification system, met equivalent local Article 22 development requirements, or both. All told, over 8,500 units, or 15% of the City's residential stock, are covered as is 14.3 million square feet of commercial and institutional development, or 20% of the total nonresidential building stock.

This includes all buildings meeting one or more of these criteria: 

• Approval under the City’s Article 22 Green Building requirements found in the Cambridge Zoning Ordinance
• Certification by the Passive House program
• Certification by Enterprise Green Communities
• Certification under a USGBC LEED standard that requires design and construction of an entire building to meet sustainability standards.

Interactive Map

The following map shows the locations of buildings covered by one or more sustainable building program. Select a building to learn about certifications and related information.  Where applicable, the map indicates that building performance data is available through the Cambridge Building Energy Use Disclosure Ordinance (BEUDO) program and recent ratings from the EnergyStar program.  BEUDO data is from the 2022 filing, which reports energy consumption during 2021. The map also provides information about health-oriented Fitwel and WELL certifications, which share many criteria with sustainable building programs.

Municipal Buildings

Since 2002, the City has required that all new municipal building projects and major renovations follow the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria. Learn more about Energy Efficient Municipal Buildings.
