With National Bike Safety Month and Bay State Bike Week in May, Cambridge Police and Community Development departments are hosting/partnering in various events to increase the safety of all people who walk, cycle or drive.
On April 7, a new law went into effect in Massachusetts that requires drivers to use headlights and taillights on motor vehicles during inclement weather and when windshield wipers are in use. The law is intended to increase safety and visibility of vehicles on the Commonwealth's roadway.
Cambridge is one of the easiest places to live or work without driving. With over 40,000 households, 100,000 jobs, and hundreds of thousands of services in just over 6 square miles of land, just about all of what people need is close at hand. With so many things close by, this affords people in Cambridge an array of transportation options.
The temporary one-way streets created in East Cambridge in February because of snow impacts will return to their previous two-way traffic pattern as of Wednesday, April 1.
On March 2, 2015, the Department of Public works (DPW) will begin to remove parking “space savers”. This includes any items placed in the roadway to hold an on-street parking spot (ie chairs, toters, barrels, crates). Items will be removed from each neighborhood on its regularly scheduled trash collection day.
Beginning on January 12, 2015, the hours of operation for metered street parking will expand from 6 PM to 8 PM, mirroring the meter operations in Harvard Square. The expanded hours will discourage vehicles from using short-term metered space as overnight parking during peak evening business hours. The hourly rate will remain unchanged.
