The Department of Human Service Programs' Recreation Division is committed to offering and supporting athletic programming that encourages skill-building and fosters positive relationships. Recreation staff manage year-round basketball leagues for Cambridge elementary, middle, and high schoolers and collaborate with community partners to support other Cambridge-based youth sports organizations. Through programs, partnerships, and events, Recreation focuses on increasing access to sports for all Cambridge youth.

Recreation staff also coordinate the permitting of all Cambridge athletic fields and athletic space, prioritizing field and facility use for youth athletic programs.

Basketball Leagues

Shoot Straight 
(January - March, registration in December)
Open to Cambridge Boys and Girls in grades 3-6

Offered in partnership by Cambridge Recreation and Shoot Straight Inc., Shoot Straight is an instructional basketball league. The goal of the program is to teach young athletes basketball skills, team play, and sportsmanship.

Cambridge Pride 
(November - mid-March, registration in October)
Open to Cambridge Boys and Girls in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade

Cambridge Pride is a travel basketball league that encourages participants to recognize and optimize their full potential as student athletes.

Golf

Junior Golf Program at Fresh Pond Golf Course

Cambridge Recreation offers a Junior Golf Program for Cambridge residents ages 7 - 16 years old. The program runs on Tuesdays from 8:45 - 11:45 a.m. at Fresh Pond Golf Course during summer months.

Each session consists of an hour of golf practice with instruction and two hours on the golf course with supervision. Participants do not need their own equipment; golf clubs can be provided. It is not required to attend every week of the program.

Cambridge Youth Hockey

Cambridge Youth Hockey provides a fun and inclusive introduction to the great sport of hockey for kids in Cambridge and our neighboring communities.

This summer street hockey league is open to Cambridge youth ages 9-12 of all gender identities. The outdoor league focuses on skills, drills, and friendly game competitions.

Orienteering

Offered by Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (CRLS) and open to CRLS students during fall and spring seasons.

Orienteering is using a map and compass to traverse through rough terrain as fast as possible to checkpoints. Competitors are timed. It is a great combination of running off-trail, thinking, and being out in nature. Student athletes will have a program of physical conditioning; improve their balance, speed and agility; learn skills to efficiently navigate with a map through an orienteering course; support each other as a team; and learn good sportsmanship.

Softball

Cambridge Girls Softball League fields teams for Spring, Summer, and Fall Seasons, and hosts skills clinics during winter months. Leagues are open to Cambridge residents age 4-14.

Swimming

Sea Dawgs

Cambridge's competitive swim team, open to Cambridge residents ages 5-18. Program is based at the War Memorial Recreation Center

Sea Dawgs encourages young swimmers to maintain their fitness and further develop their swimming skills. Swimmers are placed into small groups based on their skill level. The mission of the program is to provide an inclusive environment for all participants through a dedication to sportsmanship and health competition.

Synchronized Swimming

Open to Cambridge residents ages 6-19. Program is based at the War Memorial Recreation Center

Synchronized swimming is a combination of swimming, dance, and gymnastics performed in the water. The sport demands advanced water skills and requires great strength, endurance, flexibility, and artistry.  Learn more.

Cambridge Youth Soccer provides every child in Cambridge the opportunity to play soccer in a fun, supportive and competitive environment. Programs are available for children in preschool through 8th grade.
