Cambridge Works Graduates Aug2015

Cambridge Works, the City’s transitional jobs program for younger residents (age 18-35) who haven’t been able to get or keep jobs, celebrated its 15th graduating class during a special ceremony Aug. 20, at Cambridge City Hall.

The program provides a temporary job with the City of Cambridge, and/or other partner employers, while also offering intensive case management, soft skills development and job search assistance to help participants secure an unsubsidized job upon program completion. Cambridge Works is coordinated through the Office of Workforce Development for the Department of Human Services Program.

Mayor David P. Maher began his remarks by first expressing his gratitude to the dedicated Cambridge Works staff who mentor and help participants as they go through this challenging process and then he commended the latest graduates.

“Life doesn’t always come easy for all of us and you have made a decision and commitment to better yourselves,” said Mayor Maher. “Your success is our success and I wish you all the best.”

Program Consultant Richard Harding, Cambridge Public Health Department, who served as emcee and has been an instrumental part of Cambridge Works from the beginning said he knew of no other city in America that had a program quite as intensive as this one.

“Here in Cambridge, we try to create opportunities like this program for people, but it is only Step 1 and the rest is up to you,” said City Manager Richard C. Rossi as he addressed the graduates.  “Never forget what you’ve learned from our staff as you go on to whatever may be next and remember that you have a great support system here to help.”  Rossi also thanked the Cambridge businesses that serve as worksite partners for participants to get experience.

Comments from the Cambridge Works Class of August 2015:

“Cambridge Works has done so much for me. I came here depressed and confused. The staff have helped me believe in myself and go out and succeed.”

“It was a birthday when I got the call that would change my life. I was accepted into the Cambridge Works program.”

“I was going through a rough patch in my life and realized I needed to make changes.  Cambridge Works was a great experience and I’m ready to see what the future holds.”
