Hoops and Health

The Men’s Health League and community partners will host the annual Hoops ‘N’ Health sports tournament and other events this June to celebrate Men’s Health Month.

The Men’s Health League, based at the Cambridge Public Health Department, is a comprehensive men’s wellness program that promotes routine screenings, fitness and a healthy diet, and regular visits to a physician.

Cambridge kicked off Men’s Health Month with a Boys to Men Leadership Brunch on June 4, hosted by the Men's Health League and Men of Color Task Force.  The event featured opening remarks by Charles Daniels, CEO and founder of Fathers’ Uplift, followed by a discussion on fatherhood and an awards ceremony.

  • The Henry A. Lewis III Health Leadership Award was presented to Ellen Semonoff, Assistant City Manager for Human Services for the City of Cambridge
  • The Sion Chambers Community Health Award was presented to Shawn Proctor, a Father Facilitator for Baby University, and Luis Vasquez, a Father Outreach Worker for the Center for Families and Agenda for Children Literacy Initiative.

On Saturday, June 18, the Men’s Health League, in partnership with the Men of Color Task Force, is hosting the 23rd annual Hoops ‘N’ Health sports tournament and health fair at Hoyt Field in Cambridge.  The event will feature a basketball tournament, health information and screenings, live entertainment, children’s activities, free food, cooking demonstrations, and prizes. To sign up a team, contact Richard Harding at 617-665-3769 or rharding@challiance.org.  Rain date is Saturday, June 25.

Other June events include a men’s bike ride and an orientation for the summer session of Fit For Life.  For more information about the Men’s Health League, contact Albert Pless at the Cambridge Public Health Department at 617-665-3830 or apless@challiance.org.
