Cooking Safety

Did you know that in 2023 (up to December 29th) Cambridge Fire Companies have responded to nearly 900 fires on the stove, in the oven, in the microwave, or other cooking appliances?

Many of these fires had extended to the cabinets, wall, and other furnishings in the kitchen. Fortunately, most were quickly contained and extinguished. Some were controlled by an operating sprinkler in the room.  

Always pay full attention when cooking. Nationwide, unattended cooking is a leading cause of structure fires.

If you are over-tired or impaired in any way, don't start cooking. A better choice would be to make a cold sandwich or order take-out.

If you do have a fire in a pan on the stove, turn off the heat source and slide a cover over the pan. 

If the fire on the stove or in the oven is out of control, alert other residents and call 911 from a safe area. Cambridge Emergency Communications staff will quickly dispatch fire companies.
