Cambridge Participatory Budgeting Launches Interactive Winning Projects Map

The City of Cambridge is excited to announce the launch of the web-based Participatory Budgeting (PB) Winning Projects Map. Hosted on ArcGIS Online, the PB Winning Projects Map provides a navigational tool and central resource detailing the 72 projects that have won funding through Participatory Budgeting in Cambridge.

To support its goal of providing accessible PB project updates to the Cambridge community, the Budget Office has collaborated with the Cambridge Geographic Information System (GIS) Team to develop an interactive map that serves as an engaging and informative method for residents to learn about the status of past PB projects. Users can explore all PB-funded projects using the interactive map to learn about each project’s location, its completion status, photographs from each project site, and more. The map will be regularly updated to provide residents with up-to-date information on the completion status and implementation details of each PB project. The map is accessible via mobile or desktop devices.

In its most recent PB cycle (tenth), eight projects won funding after a record 10,522 Cambridge residents age 12 and older voted on how to spend $2 million on capital and operating projects to improve the community, marking a 20 increase in voter participation from the previous PB cycle. Since the inaugural process in 2014, the City of Cambridge has collected 9,000 ideas and committed $9.5 million to 72 Participatory Budgeting projects across 10 cycles.

Participatory Budgeting is a democratic process that empowers community members to decide how to spend part of a public budget. The goal of Participatory Budgeting is to directly involve residents in City budgeting, encourage civic engagement, foster community spirit, and help ensure that the City of Cambridge capital and operations plan reflects the priorities of Cambridge residents.
