Our monthly "Graphics Are Great!" book group is for kids aged 8-12. Check out a copy of the book beforehand, or download it from the Libby app. Our July book is Swim Team by Johnnie Christmas. This book group will meet virtually and in person at the O'Connell Branch. Please register below if you would like to attend virtually. Together we will explore the unique features of individual trees and tree species using our senses and watercolor paint as tools for creative discovery. Weather permitting we will spend most of the time outdoors so please dress for the weather and bring a hat with a brim if possible. This is a process oriented class that welcomes all levels of art experience from beginners to professional artists. Come connect with trees creatively! In order to develop Cambridge Crossing, DivcoWest was required to make improvements to Monsignor O’Brien Highway from Third Street to Museum Way. These improvements have included subsurface and surface infrastructure upgrades. This section of Monsignor O’Brien Highway is being transformed from a highway into a tree lined boulevard with bicycle lanes/cycle tracks, new sidewalks and significantly improved pedestrian crossings. Due to the construction associated with the MBTA’s Green Line Extension (GLX) Project, these improvements have been phased over several years.

Binney Street Park, located between Binney Street and Broadway along Galileo Galilei Way, is one of three new City open spaces in eastern Cambridge. The design of the park was guided by the Eastern Cambridge/Kendall Square Open Space (ECKOS) Study and Connect Kendall Square Open Space Competition, which resulted in a framework plan for the overall network of open spaces in eastern Cambridge. This new park will feature a variety of tree plantings, a dog run, lounge and play surfaces, and will include a segment of the Grand Junction Greenway.

In accordance with the City’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit, Cambridge is developing a Phosphorus Control Plan to address stormwater runoff to the Charles River. As part of the City’s stormwater program, Cambridge is working to reduce its current phosphorus loads to the Charles River through a combination of non-structural controls, like street cleaning, and structural controls, like tree box filters and rain gardens. Phase 1 of this plan must achieve the first 25% of the City’s phosphorus load reduction requirement by June 30, 2028.

In 2019, the City of Cambridge completed its Urban Forestry Master Plan. Since, the city has rebranded and taken action to upkeep the Urban Forestry Master Plan through programs such as Forest Friends and Water by Bike.

Everyone loves owls! Yet, how often do you get to see an owl up close? Perhaps you've glimpsed the shadowy form of a Great-horned Owl in the beam of your headlights as you traveled a back road at night. Have you ever scanned a frozen saltmarsh or hayfield in winter, hoping to find that arctic hunter, the Snowy Owl? How about that mob of noisy crows circling a white pine tree? Have they found an owl? Join teacher/naturalist Marcia Wilson and author/photographer/naturalist Mark Wilson in sharing their passion for owls! This program is recommended for children ages 5 and up and their caregivers.
