The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) this week announced that daytime concrete sidewalk repairs will be taking place on Route 28 (McGrath Highway) northbound between Third Street and Rufo Road. Pedestrian detours started on Monday, September 30 and will remain in place at all times for approximately three weeks.

During this time, the outbound bus stop opposite Twin City Plaza will be relocated to 201 Monsignor O’Brien Highway, just south of Third Street.

Inbound pedestrian detour:

  • Pedestrians from the northbound sidewalk will turn right at Medford Street, cross Route 28, turn left onto the southbound sidewalk, continue south over the Squires Bridge, continue south at Rufo Road, continue south to Third Street, turn left at Third Street, cross Route 28, and back onto the northbound sidewalk.

Outbound pedestrian detour:

  • Pedestrians from the northbound sidewalk will turn left at Third Street, cross Route 28, turn right onto the southbound sidewalk, continue north at Rufo Road, continue north over the Squires Bridge, turn right at Medford Street, cross Route 28, and back onto the northbound sidewalk.

The work is being conducted as part of a $20.6 million project to perform bridge repairs, paving and other related work on 1.5 miles of Monsignor O’Brien/McGrath Highway, Route 28, between Cambridge and Somerville.

Appropriate signage and messaging will be in place to guide drivers and pedestrians through the work area.

Drivers traveling through the affected area should expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution.

All scheduled work is weather dependent and subject to change without notice.
