About Sustainable Cambridge

Sustainable Cambridge is a whole-of-city effort to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and manage our adaptation to a climate-altered environment. It involves every city department including:

  • Cambridge Arts funds, promotes, and presents high-quality, community-based arts programming for the benefit of artists, residents, and visitors
  • Community Development leads Cambridge’s renewable energy and flood resilience zoning, and develops land use policies and regulations that promote the City’s climate and sustainability objectives.
  • Housing coordinates efforts to meet the housing needs of low, moderate, and middle-income residents through initiatives that create and preserve affordable housing.
  • Human Services supports residents of all ages, especially those most at risk of harm from extreme weather. 
  • Public Health provides innovative services that safeguard and enhance the health of all who live, work, and study in Cambridge.
  • Public Schools educates, inspires, empowers, and supports every student on their personal journey to achieve their highest potential.
  • Public Works leads Cambridge’s flood resilience, urban forest, stormwater, community garden, zero waste, and energy efficiency initiatives. 
  • Sustainability works across city departments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ensure a just energy transition, build climate resilience, and protect community and environmental health.
  • Transportation leads Cambridge’s transition to fossil fuel-free modes of transportation, including walking, biking, public transit, and electric vehicles.
  • Water ensures Cambridge has a safe, uninterrupted supply of high quality water.
