Sustainable Cambridge is a whole-of-city effort to transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and manage our adaptation to a climate-altered environment. It involves every city department:
- The Office of Sustainability works across city departments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ensure a just energy transition, build climate resilience, and protect community and environmental health.
- Community Development leads Cambridge’s renewable energy and flood resilience zoning, and develops land use policies and regulations that promote the City’s climate and sustainability objectives.
- Housing coordinates efforts to meet the housing needs of low, moderate, and middle-income residents through initiatives that create and preserve affordable housing.
- Human Services supports residents of all ages, especially those most at risk of harm from extreme weather.
- Public Works leads Cambridge’s flood resilience, urban forest, stormwater, community garden, zero waste, and energy efficiency initiatives.
- Transportation leads Cambridge’s transition to fossil fuel-free modes of transportation, including walking, biking, public transit, and electric vehicles.
- The Water Department ensures Cambridge has a safe, uninterrupted supply of high quality water.
- Public Schools educates, inspires, empowers, and supports every student on their personal journey to achieve their highest potential.
- Public Health provides innovative services that safeguard and enhance the health of all who live, work, and study in Cambridge.
