The City of Cambridge is moving forward with safety upgrades on Main Street, building on the foundation laid by community outreach efforts in 2023 through the Main Street Safety Improvement Project. These changes aim to enhance safety and accessibility for all road users by installing separated bike lanes, improving pedestrian crossings, and introducing measures to slow vehicle speeds. To accomplish these goals, the project will be reducing parking to one side of the street.

Since the project’s initial launch in 2023, community feedback has played a vital role in shaping the final design. The planned improvements will create a safer, more comfortable bicycle connection between Central Square and Kendall Square while aligning with the City’s Vision Zero commitment to eliminating transportation-related deaths and serious injuries.
To keep residents and stakeholders informed, the City is hosting a virtual information session and two drop-by open houses in April where attendees can learn more about planned changes, ask questions, review the installation timeline, and see how community input has influenced the design.
Upcoming Engagement Opportunities:
-
Open House: Thursday, April 17, from 5:30–7 p.m. at the Pisani Center, 131 Washington Street (drop-by event, outdoors, weather permitting)
-
Open House: Tuesday, April 22, from 4:30–6:30 p.m. at the corner of Bishop Allen Drive and Main Street (drop-by event, outdoors, weather permitting)
Installation of the project is scheduled for Spring/Summer 2025. The City remains committed to implementing these improvements in a way that balances the needs of all Main Street users, including pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and businesses.
Main Street is a key piece in the City of Cambridge’s plan for a safe, connected bicycle network. Separated bicycle lanes increase comfort for people biking by using a barrier to separate them from vehicle traffic. The Main Street Safety Improvement Project will also help the City meet the requirements of the Cycling Safety Ordinance, which mandates that Cambridge install 25 miles of separated bicycle lanes by 2026.
Residents are encouraged to sign up for Main Street Safety Improvement Project email updates to receive the latest project information.
