On September 1, 2022, the CDC recommended use of updated (bivalent) COVID-19 booster shots for better protection against COVID-19 Omicron variants. The updated Moderna booster is authorized for people ages 18 years and older. The updated Pfizer booster is authorized for people ages 12 years and older. In the coming weeks, CDC expects to recommend updated COVID-19 boosters for other pediatric groups.
Individuals are eligible to receive the new bivalent booster dose if it has been at least two months since they completed a primary vaccine series or received their most recent booster dose.
The original (monovalent) Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are no longer authorized as booster doses for individuals 12 years and older. The original Pfizer vaccine remains recommended as a booster for children ages 5 to 11.
Doses of the updated booster vaccines are being shipped to the states and are expected to be available shortly. The Cambridge Public Health Department will provide more information to residents as it becomes available. We urge all residents to get boosted with the new booster when available to be fully protected against Covid-19 illness.
