The winner of the 2024 Resident Parking Permit Photo Contest has been announced. After more than 200 people submitted photos and artwork for this year’s contest, City staff voted on this spectacular photo of Graffiti Alley in Central Square as the image that will be featured on the 2025 Resident Parking Permit sticker. The photo was taken by Mary Leno and showcases the 80-foot stretch of constantly changing graffiti, street art and signage. Officially named Richard B. “Rico” Modica Way, the alley has become a hallmark of Central Square and the City of Cambridge. It is renowned for its ever-evolving graffiti and murals, showcasing a diverse range of artistic styles that address current social issues and events. Since 2007, it has operated as a 24-hour open-air art gallery, covered by a colorful plastic-stained glass canopy.
Graffiti Alley was created by local artist Geoff Hargadon and restaurateur Gary Strack. At its launch, they invited 30 artists from as far away as Canada to contribute. Over time, it has drawn artists from across the region and beyond, including famous artists like Shepard Fairey, Momo, and Enzo & Nio.
For the contest, photographers and artists of all experience levels were invited to submit their digital photos or pieces of art that depict scenes or places in Cambridge. Past permits have featured photos of the pond at Cambridge Crossing, the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School sign, Cambridge Fire Department headquarters, and Cambridge City Hall.
Parking permits are required in all areas designated "Parking by Permit Only." Residents may apply for Resident Parking Permits for passenger vehicles and motorcycles, and/or Visitor Parking Permits for people visiting their homes. Permits must be renewed every year by March 31.
