Cambridge Cycling Safety Ordinance

Cambridge is working hard to ensure our city remains a vibrant, livable environment in which a wide range of people can live, work, and play. To do this, we need to be able to travel around the city safely and sustainably. The City’s Cycling Safety Ordinance, which was passed by the Cambridge City Council in 2019 and amended in 2020, is helping make this possible. The Ordinance calls for the City to build out a 25-mile network of separated bike lanes in the next five years.

Separated bike lanes, which generally include space and vertical dividers that create a physical distance between bicycles and motor vehicles, improve safety and create a more comfortable environment. This makes cycling accessible and attractive to a wide range of people of all ages and all abilities. Separated bike lanes can also improve the streets for pedestrians, by slowing cars and trucks and shortening the distances where walkers are exposed to cars and trucks when crossing the street.

The City will be installing separated bike lanes on many major streets, creating safe connections to allow riders to access destinations for school, work, shopping, recreation, and more. Each project for a specific street or area will include a design process with opportunities for the community to be heard and help shape the designs.
