Banyard Rustin

The Cambridge GLBT Commission is seeking nominations for The Bayard Rustin Service Award, which is bestowed to a member of the GLBT Community of color and/or ally who has worked to advance civil rights of all.

Bayard Rustin was a civil rights organizer and non-violent activist for social change. Rustin was openly gay in a time of sexual repression and oppression, an African American Quaker, a labor and human rights activist who is best known for his work as adviser to Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1950s and '60s. Most famously, Rustin was a key figure in the organization of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, at which King delivered his legendary "I Have a Dream" speech on August 28, 1963. 

Nomination Deadline is May 13, 2016.

The Bayard Rustin Service Award will be presented at the 2016 Cambridge Pride Brunch Saturday, June 11, from 9-11 a.m., at Cambridge City Hall, Sullivan Chamber, 795 Massachusetts Avenue. During the annual Pride Brunch, Mayor E. Denise Simmons will unveil a dedication plaque naming the Bayard Rustin Community Room at the City Hall Annex, 344 Broadway, 2nd Floor.
