The Department of Public Works has updated the City’s 5 Year Street and Sidewalk Plan. This plan assumes $4.5 million per year for street and sidewalk reconstruction. Additional funds are occasionally allocated for additional enhancement projects or for other street and sidewalk restoration projects. The sewer separation and stormwater management program is funded at $25M - $30M per year, and funds streets and sidewalks
The goals of the 5 Year Plan, which is a living document that is updated regularly, are to:
- Reconstruct streets, sidewalks and bicycle facilities with an emphasis on a Complete Streets approach: designing the street for all users
- Provide for comprehensive inspection/repair and upgrading of city utilities, as well as public utilities, so as to ensure new street system integrity is maintained for as long as possible once construction is complete
- Maintain safe, accessible streets and sidewalks
- Reconstruct streets, sidewalks and bicycle facilities in a prioritized fashion based on need
- Construct projects efficiently with minimum disruption to community life
- Effectively communicate design and construction projects with neighborhoods and facilitate a more integrated design process
- Provide reasonable access for all users, during street reconstruction
The City’s approach emphasizes streets designed and operated for everyone – pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and public transportation users of all ages and abilities will be able to safely move along and across complete streets. Complete Streets makes it easy to cross the street, walk to shops, and bicycle to work. They help buses to run on time and make it safe for people to walk to and from train stations. More sidewalks and bicycle facilities are included, which provides for increased accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists. During design and construction of complete streets, our goal is to communicate projects with neighborhoods and facilitate an integrated design process; minimize disruption to community life; and provide reasonable access for all users during reconstruction.
