Cambridge is recognizing Rat Week in conjunction with World Rat Day on April 4, spreading awareness about rodent control and the City’s free Private Property Rodent Control Program.
Rodents have become a growing concern in urban environments, and Cambridge is no exception. To combat this, the City offers a free rodent control assistance program for residents of buildings with four or fewer units. This initiative, a partnership between the City and a private pest control company, provides professional inspections, baiting, trapping, and follow-ups within 60 days to help control rodent populations.
David Power, Project Coordinator for Environmental Health for the City of Cambridge, emphasizes the importance of community involvement in rodent control. “This program is a great tool, but managing rodents requires a citywide effort,” he says. “Residents can help by securing trash, reducing food sources, and eliminating hiding spots.”
The Private Property Rodent Control Program allows both property owners and tenants to request an inspection. Once a request is made, a professional pest control specialist conducts an on-site assessment, identifying entry points and conditions that contribute to infestations. Based on the findings, the specialist implements a treatment plan that includes strategic baiting and trapping.
Aside from using the program, residents can take additional steps to prevent rodent issues. Simple actions like keeping outdoor trash bins tightly closed, cleaning up pet food, and sealing holes around pipes and doors can make a significant difference. The City also encourages community-wide efforts such as proper waste management and maintenance of shared spaces like alleys and parks.
Rat Week in Cambridge serves as a reminder that rodent prevention is a shared responsibility. By working together, Cambridge aims to create a cleaner and healthier urban environment. To request rodent control assistance, visit the City’s website or call the Inspectional Services Department. Let’s use World Rat Day as an opportunity to take action and keep our City rodent-free!
