On September 22, 2020 Governor Baker issued updated restaurant safety guidelines. Today, the City of Cambridge issued a related and corresponding Temporary Emergency Order Regarding Restaurant Operations.

Under the City’s new Order, restaurants may seat parties of up to but not exceeding 6 people, and beginning on October 3, restaurants may seat people in the bar area only after an inspection and approval from the City of Cambridge Inspectional Services Department. These are more restrictive than the Commonwealth’s order (which allows up to 10 people per party to be seated together and bar seating beginning on September 28, 2020).

Please note that both the State’s Restaurant Guidelines and the City of Cambridge Temporary Order Regarding Restaurant Operations prohibit congregation in bar areas, standing service, or the reopening of any business that is not a restaurant, and mandate that alcoholic beverages may only be served for on-site consumption if accompanied by food prepared on-site. Potato chips, pretzels, and other pre-packaged shelf stable foods, or other food prepared off-site, do not constitute food “prepared on-site.

The full Temporary Order Regarding Restaurant Operations can be found here.
