Upcoming Paving Work on Cycling Safety Ordinance Streets

This fall, several streets that are part of the Cycling Safety Ordinance will be repaved, including sections of Cambridge St, Garden St, and Massachusetts Ave. This will result in detours and other travel disruptions for people driving, biking, and taking buses on these corridors. Repaving is critical to ensuring the longevity of the roadway and the utilities beneath it. Once the streets are repaved, we will put back pavement markings, flex-posts, and any other traffic control infrastructure that needs to be replaced. This will result in an improved travel experience on these corridors.

  • Cambridge St (Cardinal Medeiros Ave to Second St) - The Department of Public Works will repave the vehicle and bicycle lanes of Cambridge St between Cardinal Medeiros Ave and Second St. This is maintenance paving due to the condition of the roadway surface. It is not an implementation of the Safety Improvement Project on Cambridge St; the same markings that are currently in this section will be replaced.
  • Garden St (Linnaean St to Chauncy St) - Eversource Gas's contractor will partially repave sections of Garden St that were impacted by the gas main work that took place over the past year. Temporary markings and flex posts will be installed to better mark the existing bicycle lanes and parking areas throughout the winter. Permanent replacement of markings, flex-posts, and symbols will take place next year.
  • Massachusetts Ave (Sellers St to Trowbridge St) - The Department of Public Works will repave Massachusetts Ave (west of Central Square) from from curb to curb, between Sellers St and Trowbridge St. Following repaving, we will replace all markings, flex-posts, and symbols that had been installed as part of the Mid-Mass Ave Safety Improvement Project in 2021. Minor modifications will be made at the Hancock St intersection to better accommodate the in-street dining areas, and the Harvard-bound bus stop will move to the far side of the intersection in front of 925 Massachusetts Ave.
  • Massachusetts Ave (Church St to Waterhouse St) - The Department of Public Works will repave Massachusetts Ave (north of Harvard Square) from curb to curb, between Church St and Waterhouse St. This is maintenance paving due to the condition of the roadway surface. The same markings that are currently in this section will be replaced. Future changes to this section of the roadway will be made as part of the Mass Ave Partial Construction Project, for which outreach and design is ongoing.
