Public Toilets

In 2012, the City convened a Public Toilets Working Group to discuss the issue of expanding public toilets in commercial squares, parks and playgrounds.

To better understand level of demand for public toilets and the impact of limited public facilities on residents and visitors, the working group conducted a series of interviews and surveys in 2013.

The results of the survey, 2013 Public Toilets Survey: Cambridge Residents, Workers & Visitors, are available on the Cambridge Public Health Department website: http://www.cambridgepublichealth.org/policy-practice/public-toilets/index.php.

Nearly 850 people completed the survey, which targeted individuals likely to be impacted by or concerned about this issue, including: parents of small children; active users of the city’s parks, playgrounds, athletic fields, open spaces and bike paths; and community advocates.

The Working Group includes representatives from the City Manager’s Office, the Mayor’s Office, the Cambridge Public Health Department, the Department of Public Works, the Community Development Department, the Cambridge Police Department, the Department of Human Service Programs, the Historical Commission and the Inspectional Services Department.
