Thousands of new college graduates will soon be looking to start a career, and a key advantage is knowing where to look for a job. With this in mind, Livability.com has named Cambridge a Top 10 Best City for New College Grads, 2014. Cambridge offers great job opportunities, a high concentration of young professionals and many cultural amenities.
For this list of cities, editors looked at factors such as the number of 25- to 34-year-olds living in each city, the availability of rental properties, unemployment rates, educational attainment levels, use of public transportation and the types of jobs these places offer. Our editors also sought out cities that cater to a younger demographic by offering lots of recreational activities, hot nightlife and a hip vibe.
Also taken into account were the top-hiring industries, which, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, are: educational services; professional, scientific and technical services; health care and social assistance; and government.
“Businesses relocate for access to a talented workforce. But, increasingly, those young talents are choosing where to move after college based on livability,” says Livability.com editor Matt Carmichael. “These 10 cities are great places for recent grads, which should put them on the radar of employers looking to expand as well.”
Cambridge, Mass. has more than 600 companies providing an ample supply of jobs, most of which are high paying when compared to the average American salary. Housing, while in high demand and somewhat more expensive than the national average, isn't too difficult to find. More than 63 percent of homes in Cambridge are rental properties. The city's eclectic mix of cultural amenities and exciting entertainment options, including an impressive waterfront, public transportation and a vibrant downtown, appeal to a high number of residents between the ages of 25 and 34.
