This September marks the 15th year for National Preparedness Month (NPM), a month-long effort that encourages households, businesses, and communities to prepare and plan for emergencies. As part of this year’s initiative, public safety agencies in the City of Cambridge are stressing the importance of creating a Smart911 profile to assist first responders with their response.

By creating your free profile with Smart911 before an emergency situation arises, you can take the time to ensure that the information is correct and accurate and exactly what you would like to be communicated to first responders in an emergency. When an emergency call is made from a phone registered with a Safety Profile, the 9-1-1 systems recognizes the phone number and automatically displays the profile on the screen of the Cambridge Emergency Communications Department’s call taker who receives your call.

“Smart911 can save critical time and provide valuable situational awareness in the event of an emergency,” said Cambridge Emergency Communications Department Director Christina Giacobbe. “The additional information provided in a Smart911 Safety Profile enables us to know exactly where public safety are going and who we are looking for in emergencies such as a house fire or at the scene of a vehicle accident.”

Additional information including pets in the home, vehicle details in the event of an accident, and even emergency contacts can all be included in a Safety Profile.  All information is optional and the citizen has the ability to choose what details they would like to include.

To sign up today, visit https://camb.ma/CambMASmart911 and help us protect you, your loved ones, and other members of your household, including your pets. Residents are also encouraged to sign up to the Cambridge Alert Network for other services to receive importance emergency and non-emergency information: http://www.cambridgema.gov/Services/cambridgealertnetwork.
