Committee: Environment
Cost: $200,000
Location: 10 charging heads at 3 locations to be determined.
Short Description: Install Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations at 3 locations with 10 charging heads. EV adoption is growing steadily as measured by EV charging station data collected by the City. This proposal responds to a strong demand from residents who have indicated a need for more publicly available EV chargers.
Long Description:
Electric Vehicles have been found to mitigate some of the environmental impact caused by car use. Thus, to incentivize residents to transition from gas to electric power vehicles, the city must provide funding for EV infrastructure projects. Incentivizing the use of EVs aligns with Massachusetts’ goal to eliminate the sale of gas-powered vehicles in 2035. However, the existing EV infrastructure in Cambridge does not meet residents' needs, as many people experience difficulties with finding available chargers at convenient times. The city has crafted a plan to install 100 charging heads across the city by 2025 in response to this demand. Increase in usage over currently installed stations signals adoption and growing demand for more charging infrastructure.
This proposal will support the installation of 3 Level 2 EV charging stations across the city (10 total of charging heads) bringing the city closer to its 2025 goal. The implementation of this proposal will continue to offset emissions from internal combustion engine cars, adding to the wellbeing of the environment and a cleaner energy Cambridge.
