Committee: Youth
Cost: $150,000
Location: Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (CRLS) for up to three years.
Short Description: Student clubs at CRLS currently do many great things for the community: volunteering, tutoring, academic and professional development, and more. Let's provide funding to help expand their ability to engage in the community and beyond!
Long Description:
This proposal would provide funding in the form of a grant for clubs at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School so students can have better club experience and support them in the work they do for the Cambridge community. There were many ideas submitted in the PB11 process asking for high school students to get involved in a variety of community service activities such as teaching bike safety skills, caring for the environment around the city, and serving the community in other ways. Many clubs at CRLS actually already provide these services; however, more resources will allow students to expand the scope of their projects and activities.
There are clubs at CRLS that would like to do more in the community (hosting events, volunteering, etc.), but they don’t necessarily have the time to increase their fundraising activities because they’re actively working in the community. CRLS currently provides financial support to core academic clubs, however, there are over 90 clubs who don’t receive support from the school and could benefit from this proposal. In particular, new clubs at CRLS have a hard time getting started because they don’t have the financial resources to start their projects.
This project would be like a grant, overseen by the CRLS Extra Curricular Committee, and it would require clubs to apply for funding every semester. Clubs, especially new clubs, could use this funding for travelling in the community, purchasing supplies for their work in the community, renting a space for events and tournaments, and much more.
This funding will encourage more student participation in CRLS clubs and more civic engagement. This funding will also allow students to expand the scope of their club projects. High school students develop leadership and organizational skills as club projects increase in scope and size. When funding goes directly to clubs and high school students, students can make more meaningful contributions to the community.
