Artwork Celebrating Same-Sex Marriage Rights
Committee: Community Resources
Total Cost: $75,000
Location: To be determined with community input
Short Description:
Create an art installation celebrating Cambridge as the first City in the United States to issue same-sex marriage licenses. The planning and design process will include local artists, LGBTQ+ groups and advocates, and the general public.
Long Description:
The City of Cambridge made history on May 17, 2004 by issuing the first same-sex marriage licenses in the nation. A public art installation would provide the community with a permanent tribute to this momentous event. Further, the planning and design process would be an opportunity for many different groups to come together in a way that honors the unity of the event itself.
Cambridge is continually on the forefront of inclusive social movements. It also has a long and robust history of meaningful public art. This art installation would represent a joining of these two traditions. It would benefit not just the groups it honors, but all citizens who relish the City’s proud social and cultural identities.
